The Argentinean childhood memoirs of a great British naturalist and author of Green Mansions.
As W. H. Hudson lay sick in bed in England when be was nearly eighty years old, his entire childhood on the wild pampas of Argentina returned to him so vividly that he could write in exact detail about these long-forgotten memories. This unique book is the result -- starting with his earliest memories of the house in which he was born and finishing with the disastrous close of his childhood idyll when typhus strikes at age fifteen. In between, Hudson's interest in birding and nature unfolds into a passion; we get to know such characters as the old dog Caesar, the nearest English neighbor, the patriarch of the pampas, schoolmasters, gauchos, and Hudson's beloved mother and elder brothers.
Not only great natural history, "Far Away and Long Ago" is also one of the most magical childhood memoirs ever written.
