Introduction : the test of war -- Gatekeepers and bookkeepers -- Getting the news from abroad -- Broadcasting -- Evolution, not revolution -- Abroad at home -- News from abroad for those from abroad -- The electronic newspaper -- Conclusion : the journalistic guerrillas
Coverage of international news by the American mass media has been simplistic and not very widespread, a situation that was only partially and temporarily addressed after the shock of the September 11th attacks, according to the author. He surveys the state of foreign coverage by U.S. newspapers and television programs, largely blaming the search for profit for the dearth of good coverage. On the bright side, he says, there are many freelance (or "guerilla") reporters that are doing good work, but they need better funding opportunities.
