| Summary, etc | Design Alchemy is a synthesis of the vision of two talented designers, Ashley and Allegra Hicks. Their interiors are inspired by a restrained, classical style juxtaposed with vibrant edges of ethnic and modern. For those to whom bold contemporary or stark minimalism go too far, this is a sophisticated, enduring look for the modern interior. Starting with a section on the influence of classic styles and interiors, Design Alchemy then looks at the inspiration for Ashley's furniture and Allegra's textiles and how they evolve in the studio. Strategies for combining different elements within the interior is the next stage -- whether with reference to form, texture and colour or mixing styles and balancing different features. The final focus is on the completed rooms and how they were designed to suit the needs of individual clients -- from a maisonette in London to a large villa in Turin. The challenges of six problem rooms are also analysed here, illustrating how the design process was adapted around them. This is a unique view of the work of this celebrated design partnership. The special quality of their individual designs and their combined work -- the alchemy of the title -- provides a style template for creating an interior with personality, warmth and lasting appeal. |
