Summary: Postcards from the Nursery is a tribute to the legions of children's illustrators - the renowned and the unsung heroines and heroes of children's illustration in the early twentieth century. At that time, postcards played an important role in popular children's publishing. Postcards and greetings cards, along with mass circulation magazines for boys and girls, provided many illustrators with a stepping stone to even greater achievements. Many, like Anne Anderson, Mabel Lucie Attwell. Cicely Mary Barker and Arthur Rackham took that successful step, others never received the accolades they richly deserved. The picture postcards contained in this volume display a rich and colorful variety of illustrative styles, covering a period of over 40 years. In addition, the book features original research on the lives and work of 100 or so artists and illustrators, many of whom have remained hitherto undocumented. Biographical details of around 100 artists, are accompanied by photos and examples of over 600 postcards in full color, together with other relevant juvenilia. The appendix lists all the books and postcards illustrated by the featured artists.

Includes bibliographical references (p. 285) and index.
