When 17-year-old Meryem is found unconscious and disheveled by the side of a lake, her family believes the worst-- that her chastity has been lost. An ancient moral code condemns her to death for staining the family honor. She has a choice: kill herself, or be executed by a family member. When Meryem cannot do the deed, Ali Riza Amca-- the village leader-- orders his son Cemal to take her to Istanbul and murder her on the way. Cemal is unable to kill her, and the cousins flee together, becoming fugitives from their repressive background. During their journey across traditional and modern-day Turkey, they discover the cosmopolitan world, and attempt to confront heretofore-unquestioned customs.
The girl -- Cemal is back -- Trip to Istanbul -- The bridge -- A place to stay -- The tourist -- Circumstances demanded -- Tightening the knot -- The necklace -- Aysel's warning -- Cemal's rage -- The truth.
